Description


Private sector financial development is essential to the promotion of successful and sustainable economies in low and middle-income countries around the world.

Sound and efficient financial markets can ensure that resources are allocated where they are most productive, assisting job creation and spurring economic growth.

IFC's goal is to prioritize investment in the financial sector because it promotes development in all other sectors.


The Financial Institution Group (FIG) is one of IFC's key Departments responsible for a significant portion of IFC's business volume, profitability and development reach, approximately 40%.

FIG engages in a wide range of sub-sectors including Microfinance, SME, Gender, Climate, Insurance, Capital Markets, Housing, Distressed Assets, and other areas, with both investment and advisory services delivered globally to IFC's clients through IFC's global network.


FIG has three main objectives:
1) financial inclusion 2) servicing the real economy and 3) mobilizing third-party resources.


FIG's East Asia team is based across the region with main hubs and offices in Singapore, Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila, Beijing and Hanoi.

The team members work on both new business development and portfolio management across the region.

With a diverse network of markets, the pipeline of new transactions ranges from investing fresh equity in banks to structured finance products which help develop local capital markets.


FIG East Asia Regional Industry Team is seeking a Principal Investment Officer with significant local market and industry experience to help grow and develop its business across the region.

The Principal Investment Officer will be covering Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos PDR out of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.


Roles and Responsibilities
The duties and accountabilities of the role include but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of banking, financial institutions, and related industry knowledge
  • Strategic understanding of sector and industry dynamics, as well as regional and country context development. Ability to drive WBG solutions to support the private sector, develop a strong pipeline of good quality investment opportunities through anticipating market trends and employing sector/country knowledge
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, banking and multilateral partners and government officials to develop specific investment opportunities
  • Evaluate, structure, negotiate, and close new transactions, loan restructuring and rescheduling, capital increases and equity sales, etc.
  • Provide leadership and support in the development of the Financial Institutions Group's knowledge management strategy, and assist in execution of this strategy
  • Coordinate closely with social, environmental, advisory and technical assistance colleagues in order to champion IFC's value to our clients' businesses, find pragmatic solutions to the specific sector challenges, and achieve sustainable development impact
  • Ability to work under pressure, deliver high quality projects and prioritize work as necessary to deliver on goals and regional and FIG targets
  • Supervisor, mentor and coach lessexperienced investment staff and help build talent and grow skill base of staff
  • Take responsibility for other project or strategy related activities related to FIG's business activities in the region

Selection Criteria

  • Master's degree in finance, economics or other related areas; accreditation as a CFA or CPA is considered a plus
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in the financial sector, with evidence of growing expertise in banking and nonbanking financial institutions and finance related disciplines
  • Broad, in depth experience and demonstrated success with a diverse range of clients, regions and projects covering full range of IFC and WBG products/ instruments and involving highly complex factors
  • Ability to anticipate where future opportunities and innovation will emerge in markets/ sectors, to leverage expertise and reputation to connect IFC with those opportunities to grow business and open new markets
  • Excellent negotiation and structuring skills
  • Ability to influence others based on understanding of the implications of investment decisions for IFC's business
  • Ability to develop and draw on relationships across multiple teams
